1.Product Introduction


Copper Ore Beneficiation Ball Mill is a core grinding equipment specifically designed for copper ore processing. Its primary function is to further pulverize the crushed copper ore, ensuring the thorough liberation of copper minerals from the gangue. This process provides the qualified slurry/pulp feed required for subsequent mineral processing stages, such as flotation.



2.Application


In the copper beneficiation circuit, the ball mill performs the critical task of grinding. After undergoing primary, secondary, and tertiary crushing, the ore particle size is still insufficient for the flotation requirements. The ball mill, through the impact and attrition of steel balls, pulverizes the ore to a micron scale (typically requiring over 60% passing -0.074mm). This ensures the monomeric liberation of copper minerals—such as chalcopyrite and bornite—from the gangue, significantly enhancing the flotation recovery rate.

Under-grinding prevents copper minerals from being fully exposed, leading to a drop in recovery rates; conversely, over-grinding can cause slimming (ore turning into mud), which negatively affects the flotation efficiency. Therefore, the ball mill must operate in a closed-circuit system with classification equipment (such as hydrocyclones) to precisely control the discharge fineness.



3.Working Principle


The ball mill features a horizontal rotating drum structure, loaded with steel balls as grinding media. The operational process is as follows:

  • Impact Crushing: The drum rotates at 60%–80% of its critical speed. Under the influence of centrifugal force and friction, the steel balls are lifted to a certain height and then cascade or cataract down, delivering powerful impacts to crush the ore.

  • Attrition Grinding: The sliding and rolling motions between the steel balls, the ore, and the liners create a grinding effect that further refines the particles.

  • Wet Grinding Optimization: During wet grinding, the water flow assists in material transport and dissipates heat, effectively preventing over-pulverization.

  • Continuous Flow: A constant feed at the inlet creates a material level gradient, which drives the pulp/slurry to flow slowly from the intake to the discharge end, completing the grinding operation.

Specifically in wet grinding, the mill works in a closed-circuit system with hydrocyclones to precisely control discharge fineness, meeting strict requirements from 200 to 400 mesh.

Although traditional ball mills are energy-intensive (accounting for 40%–50% of a concentrator's total power consumption), modern units have achieved substantial energy reductions through technical innovations:

  • VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) Technology: Dynamically adjusts drum speed based on ore hardness and feed size, maintaining peak efficiency and achieving energy savings of 10%–40%.

  • High-Efficiency Drive Systems: Utilizing Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) or Direct Drive technology reduces transmission losses, achieving a power factor of 0.94–0.99 and maximizing grid utilization.

  • Advanced Wear-Resistant Materials: Liners made of high-chromium steel, manganese steel, or rubber composites extend service life, reducing replacement frequency and maintenance costs.
